I cut my hair. I like to think it looks a little Chris Cornell, but what greets me in the mirror each morning is mainly Jarhead. Ah well - it's a lot lighter and easier to manage, if nothing else.
Honestly not sure why I did it. |

How did I not know that Tool are about to release a new album? I must be losing my touch.
And they credit the new material's heavier sound to contact with Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo, who they met while touring with Fantômas! |

New Scientist reports that the US military are developing a non-lethal plasma weapon that induces excruciating pain. We know that they just shoot non-Americans, so who 'are the large hostile groups' this weapon is being designed for? I think they're preparing for the revolution... |

mood: jubilant music: The Nurse Who Loved me - A Perfect Circle
|
Saw APC at Festival Hall last night, and they were silly, and spectacular.
Highlights:
- Josh Freese outdoing even his studio work, especially on the explosive start to their first song of the night, 'Vanishing'.
- Maynard politely acknowledging how jealous we must be that we don't have Arnold Schwarzenegger as a governor in our country, followed for the rest of the night with quotes from Kindergarten Cop.
- Failure's 'The Nurse Who Loved Me' (covered on APC's recent album) performed the rocking way, like the original.
- Maynard demanding that Jordie tell a joke, to which he replied (attributing it to James) "Where does a penguin keep his money? In a snow bank."
- Jordie's final words before he left the stage: "Who's your daddy, and what does he do?"
Maybe you had to be there. :) |

expoduck and I won't be at the 9th Ward this Tuesday - we'll be seeing Fruit at the Spiegeltent. We advise you do the same, because they rock.
This could be the last time I post for a week or so at least - as if I wasn't busy enough I've got the biggest housemoving I've ever done starting this week. Hopefully by the end of it, though, I'll be installed very comfortably in my current favourite suburb for living - Brunswick. |

Firstly and most importantly. expoduck and I have found our way back to each other. Not everyone wants to hear it, but I want to tell you all. It's something real special.
Secondly, I've finally got a full time job: Junior Developer at MyInternet with the likes of tyggerjai. It's pretty special too.
All in all, life's taken a terrifyingly lurch towards perfection. Trying not to over-think it. |

... and I feel so much better.
The music was great - 'Judith' by A Perfect Circle (has a real slow beat but I worked out a way to dance to it) 'Wish' by NIN (old skool NIN!) 'The Gentle Art Of making Enemies' and 'Digging The Grave' by Faith No More (I went off) and 'Part Of Me' by Tool (absolutely impossible to dance to, but I had fun trying.) For silliness, we got Cypress Hill's 'Rock Superstar' (I bounced around waving gang signs with a bunch of hyper kiddies) and to finish, 'Just A Girl' by No Doubt, to which I thought WTF, and danced like a mad thing. Sure, I'll be sore for a few days, I spent my last few cents on a single beer and my clothes smell like I've been living in a dumpster, but I had an incredible time. And I think I know why.
DV8's generally got this great sense of community. As I told the stunning guy who may or may not have been trying half-heartedly to pick me up, people come for the music, generally not to fight or pick up. (That's probably why he gave up.) eg. Cute gothette gets stuck at the bar 'cause a big punk has inadvertently trod on her train - I'm nice and tap the punk on the ankle, the punk is nice, doesn't taking offence and doesn't take a swing at me. Everyone's happy. I turn up by myself, people don't mind me dancing and wandering around alone - some people even recruit me to mosh with them. Nice.
Of course, there were two wasted-looking guys who brush past me just a fraction harder than was justifiable, which put me in defensive mode (the bouncers are good, but with no friends to watch your back, it's hard not to get paranoid.) I spent a total of about twenty seconds tracking them across the room, but they were no trouble.
There's the issue of the regulars - huge metal fans in gear like 'Cradle Of Filth' t-shirts. most people I invite think that these guys (and occasionally girls) are intimidating, but it couldn't be further from the truth. They thrash around, but the second they touch you, they tend to jump back and apologise - they're generally pretty shy.
All in all, a great night. Only saw one person I knew (barely) but I feel like I spent it with some really cool people. If you were there, thanks.
(Now, if I could just work out the author of that weird SMS, and their intent...) |

I'm running away, I'm running away I'm running away, I'm running away
I'll take what is mine Hold what is mine Suffocate what is mine Bury what's mine
Soon the water will come And claim what is mine I must leave it behind and climb to a new place now.
The water is rising up on me. Thought the sun would come deliver me, but the truth has come to punish me instead. |

mood: discontent music: Memory - Concrete Blonde/To Have & To Have Not - Billy Bragg
|
After reading Dead Man Speaks (down the page a little) on William Gibson's blog, I realised that I've always had something bordering on a phobia of being forgetful (those that rely on me for stuff seem to develop the same thing, so I'm not alone...)
One slightly strange place it seems to strike me is the songs I can play (or am learning to play) on guitar. I get this feeling that after hours of hard work learning chords, choruses etc. they just drift out of my mind, never to return. So I've made a list, which in itself is an iteresting and fairly accurate cross-section of my musical tastes...
Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)
Billy Bragg - The Man In The Iron Mask
Concrete Blonde - Little Conversations
- Carry Me Away
- Rain
- When I Was A Fool
Metallica - Nothing Else Matters
- One
Vast - Flames
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams
Paul Kelly - Sweet Guy Waltz
So if you've heard me play, you've heard me play one of these (and hopefully more of you will, at the 9th Ward or somesuch.) Only problem is, I'm sure I've forgotten one...
PS. If you've read sleazemonkey's post, well, it's true - we've broken up. The most amiable ever, for me. Same rules apply for both of us, though - don't post comments about it, tell us to our faces. Announcing it here is just to keep you all in the loop. |
